Zhenze, an ancient town in Wuzhong district, Suzhou, lies beside the Taihu Lake and is crisscrossed by canals, streets, and numerous stone bridges. It is the birthplace of Suzhou's renowned silk industry, which was started around a thousand years ago and later prospered to nationwide fame during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Zhenzhe is famous for its distinctive Suzhou-style buildings, bridges, temples, and traditional gardens, including the Ciyun Temple Tower built during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280 AD), Shijian Hall, a private garden built in the 19th century by a wealthy local family, and Yuji Bridge, built in 1715 in commemoration of Yu the Great, the legendary Chinese ruler famed for his introduction of flood control.
