Black tiles against white walls, stone bridge over a striped river, upturned eaves, boats rowed or anchored by the bank, and so on, all of these have become signs of southern China and have become increasingly family-friendly.

Lili town, once known as Lihua (Pear Blossom) village and neighboring Luxu ancient town in the east, is a captivating old river town hidden in Suzhou’s corner of Wujiang district and has been notable for its picturesque landscape and historic relics such as distinctive old valleys and antiquated architecture. It is primitive, beautiful, elegant, and serene, and is said to be the most authentic waterside ancient town in the southern Yangtze River area. The town is crisscrossed by numerous rivers, lakes, and ponds, making it a land of fish and rice.

The history of Lili dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). During the reign of Emperor Jiaqing (1796-1820) of the Qing Dynasty, Lili was developed to be a populous and prosperous town with many boats and crowds of people in the streets.

It is the hometown of Liu Yazi (1887-1958), a Chinese poet and social activist known as "the last most outstanding poet of the traditional school" in China. Today, more and more domestic and overseas visitors are lured to the scenic spot because of its primitive scenery and historic interests, as well as the draw that comes from celebrities and powerful people who have homes in the area.

Tranquil Lili has been included in the national historic and cultural town lists of China. Besides, once going there, you must take the delight in its widely known specialty food, the spicy chicken feet.
