It is China’s folk custom to appreciate lanterns on Jan 15 on China’s lunar calendar. As early as the Song Dynasty(960-1279), lanterns had already become an independent handicraft in Suzhou. Suzhou lanterns have a long history with exquisite and beautiful artistic features and are famous for their complicated patterns, exquisite designs, beautiful looks and splendid styles.

Lantern-making is a smart mix of paper effigy, pasting, paper cutting, paper carving, painting and other craftsmanship. Suzhou’s ancient architecture and Ming Dynasty’ s Wumen paintings help Suzhou lanterns form unique styles, featuring buildings and supplemented with people, landscape, flowers, birds and animals, highlighting the folk custom of Yangtze River area.

Lantern appreciation has gradually disappeared in the country. But Suzhou lanterns are still very popular, and many people from other regions order and buy Suzhou lanterns.
